Paw Print Pattern for Coaster and / or square
I have found a lot of tutorials on these paw print patterns on YouTube and around the web. Some of them just do the paw print as a coaster, while others show you how to make the paw print into a square. So, I wanted to bring them both together in one post.
It started with hubby wanting me to make a blanket for our toy poodle, so I wanted to do a puppy themed blanket just for him. When I found the paw print, I knew I wanted to make this one.
Materials Needed
To make these incredibly cute paw prints as coasters or squares, you will need two different colors of yarn. I personally went through my stash of leftover yarn to use it up, as each square doesn’t take much yarn to make.
- 2 Colours – #4 worsted weight yarn
- Crochet Hook: Depending on the size of the square that you want you can go up or down a hook size, but I used a 4.0 mm / G6 hook.
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle: to weave in your ends.
Stitches and Abbreviations
- CH = chain
- ST(s) = stitch(es)
- SC = single crochet
- SC3TOG = single crochet 3 together
- HDC = half double crochet
- DC = double crochet
- TC = triple crochet
- FPTC = front post triple crochet
- SS = slip stitch
Paw Print Motif Pattern
Round 1:
Make a magic ring. CH 2, then 15 DC into the ring, SS to join.
Round 2:
CH 1, SC into the same ST, HDC, DC into the next ST, 2 TC into the next two STs, 2 DC, HDC into the next ST, 1 SC into the next ST, HDC, DC into the next ST, DC, TC into the next ST, TC, DC into the next ST, DC, HDC into the next ST, 1 SC into the next ST, HDC, DC into the next ST, 2 TC into the next two STs, 2 DC, HDC into the next ST, 1 SC into the next ST, SS to 1st SC.
- fasten off that color and weave in ends. Then take your alternate color and attach the yarn where you just made your SS.
Note: You can crochet in your ends as you go if you hate weaving in a bunch of ends like me.
Round 3:
CH1, SC into the same ST, SC into the next 2 STs, 2 SC into the next 5 STs, SC into the next 2 STS, SC3TOG, 2 SC into the next 6 STs, SC3TOG, SC into the next 2 STs, 2 SC into the next 5 STs, SC into the last 2 STs, SS to 1st ST.
- fasten off and weave ends. Locate the SC3TOG that is followed by the 2 SC in the next ST. Attach your first color yarn at 3 STs back from SC3TOG.
Round 4:
CH 2, 2DC into the same ST, 3 DC into the next ST, skip 3 STS, 3 DC into the next 2 STs, skip 4 STs, 3 DC into the next 2STs, skip 3 STs, 3 DC into the next ST, 2 DC, HDC into the next ST.
- TURN YOUR WORK
Round 5:
Skip 2 STs, 3 DC into the next 2 STs, Skip 2 STs, SS into the space, * repeat 3 more times for a total of 4x, finishing with a SS into the CH2 space. You have now made the 4 paws.
- fasten off and weave in ends. With your alternate color yarn, attach it to the base of the small paw print.
Round 6:
CH1, SC into CH space, SC into the SS, SC into the next 2 STs, 2 SC into the next 2 STs, FPTC into SC STs from round 3. * Repeat 2x (for a total of 3), SC into the next 2 STs, 2 SC into the next 2 STs, SC into the next 2 STs, SC into the top of HDC ST and SC to the side of HDC ST. SS to the base.
- fasten off and weave in ends. You are now finished with the paw motif.
- Note: if you are continuing to make a square, do not fasten off.

Paw Print Square
This next section will show you how to turn the paw print motif you just made into a square that can be used for making a paw print blanket. (Or whatever you fancy).
Round 1:
CH 1, SC into same ST,
CH 3, skip 3 STS, 1 SC,
CH 3, skip 3 STS, 1 SC,
CH 3, skip 3 STs, 1 SC,
CH 3, skip SS, skip 3 STs, 1 SC,
CH 3, skip 3 STs, 1 SC,
CH 1, skip 3 STS, HDC, CH 1
TURN YOUR WORK
Round 2:
SC into the space underneath,
CH 5, SC into the next space,
CH 3, SC into the next space,
CH 3, SC into the next space,
CH 3, SC into the next space,
CH 5, SC into the next space,
CH 3, skip STs and SC into the 3rd ST of your 1st finger
CH 3, skip 3 STS, 1 SC,
TC into the 1st SC of the next finger,
TC into the next ST,
CH 3, DC into the same ST (as the TC)
CH 3, skip 3 STs, and SC,
CH 3, SC into the 3rd ST of the next finger,
CH 3, skip 3 STs, and DC
CH 3, TC into the same ST (as the DC)
TC into the next ST,
SC into the 3rd ST of the next finger,
CH 3, skip 3 STs and SC,
CH 1, HDC into the 1st SC, then CH 2.
TURN YOUR WORK
Round 3:
HDC into the space underneath, 2 SC into same space,
CH1, 2 SC into next space, HDC into same space,
CH 1, 3 TC into next space, CH 3, 3 TC into same space (this is your 1st corner)
CH 1, 3 DC into next space * (2x more, for a total of 3)
CH 1, 3 TC into next space, CH 3, 3 TC into same space (this is your 2nd corner)
CH 1, HDC into the next space, 2 SC into same space,
CH 1, 2 SC into next space, HDC into same space,
CH 1, 3 TC into next space, CH 3, 3 TC into same space (this is your 3rd corner)
CH 1, 3 DC into next space * (2x more, for a total of 3)
CH 1, 3 TC into next space, CH 3, 3 TC into same space (this is your 4th corner)
CH, SS into the HDC ST.
- fasten off and weave in ends. You have completed your square.
I found this very confusing at first, so I needed a visual to see what she was doing. I found the YouTube video. Although the tutorial is not in English, the subtitles are. I found this very helpful, and I could follow along easily. You can watch the video below.
In the end I made a paw print blanket, and I lined it with black fleece fabric on the back for our poodle Oliver. Here is the finished product.
