If you’ve been searching for a free crochet cardigan pattern that’s as fun to make as it is to wear, look no further! Meet the Colorburst Crochet Cardigan — my colorful take on the Red Heart “On the Bright Side” crochet cardigan from Yarnspirations. This project absolutely stole my heart the moment I saw the original design, and I knew I had to put my own spin on it.
What Makes This Cardigan Special?
The Colorburst Cardigan is a vibrant, open-front crochet cardigan that features a gorgeous color-blocked design using multiple shades of Red Heart Super Saver yarn. I chose bold, cheerful tones to give it that burst-of-color personality that the name promises. The result is a wearable piece of art — something you’ll reach for again and again whether you’re layering over a t-shirt on a cool morning or dressing up a casual outfit.
The construction is straightforward enough for an intermediate crocheter, worked in pieces and seamed together with a clean, polished finish. Six buttons add a charming detail at the front, making it just as pretty when worn open or gently closed.
Pattern Details
This cardigan is available in three size ranges to fit a wide variety of bodies:
- XS/S/M — fits bust 28–38″ (finished bust 44″)
- L/XL — fits bust 40–46″ (finished bust 56″)
- 2/3/4/5XL — fits bust 48–62″ (finished bust 68″)
You’ll need Red Heart Super Saver yarn in your chosen color combination (the original calls for Soft White, Soft Navy, Orchid, Shocking Pink, Pretty N’ Pink, Bright Yellow, and Minty — though I encourage you to play with colors and make it your own!), a US H/8 (5mm) crochet hook, yarn needles, stitch markers, and 4 – 6 buttons approximately 1″ in diameter. I used 6.
My Experience Making It
I truly loved the process of crocheting this cardigan. Watching the color stripes come together row by row was so satisfying, and the fit turned out beautifully. It’s the kind of project that keeps you motivated because you can see it taking shape quickly. If you’re an intermediate crocheter looking for a project that feels rewarding without being overwhelming, this is it.
