I was searching for something to make for my step-son for a hand-made Christmas gift. Sometimes it’s difficult to make stuff for guys, other than the usual hats and scarves. But we live in Texas and he loves his Cowboys, guns and his beer, so I thought this would be perfect for him.
This is a free pattern that I created on a whim, and it’s a very quick project. Great for last minute gifts, and most of the time, you can use your leftover yarn to make one.
This pattern makes a beer cozy for a standard 12-ounce beer can, however if you want it to fit a 16-ounce can, then simply add more rows to the body. This is also a great cozy for soda cans.
Can size
The standard size of a beer can in the United States is 12 fluid ounces (355 milliliters). The average dimensions for a 12 oz beer can are approximately 4.83 inches (12.3 cm) in height and 2.6 inches (6.6 cm) in diameter. However, depending on the brand of beer, these respective measurements may vary in size.
16 oz – approx. 6.4 Inches (15.7 cm) in height and 2.6 inches (6.6 cm) in diameter.

Beer Cozy Crochet Pattern
Note: CH1 does not count as a stitch
Round 1:
Make a magic ring. CH 1, then 12 DC into the ring, SS to join. Tighten ring. (12)
Round 2:
CH 1, DCx2 into each DC around, SS to 1st DC. (24)
Round 3:
SC into the same stitch as the SS. 2SC into next ST. *SC into next ST, 2SC into next ST*. Repeat from * to end. SS to 1st ST. (36)
Round 4:
BPSC (single crochet into the back loop only) all the way around. SS to 1st ST. (36)
This is the last round that you slip stitch to join. From here out when working on the body, we want to work in the round. This will make the body seamless.
Place a stitch marker in the first stitch, this is your BOR. (Beginning of round). This helps you to keep track of where you are.
Round 5-15:
SC into every ST around. (Do not SS, do not CH1).
- If you wish to change colours, here is where do you it, otherwise carry on for 2 more rounds.
Round 16-17:
Change colour on the last ST of the previous round. Continue SC into each ST around. Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.
Note: if you are making a cozy for a 16-oz can, you will need to add more rows to increase the height of the cozy to 6.4 Inches (15.7 cm).
If you wish to add some embroidered patches to personalize your beer cozy, then you can stitch them on at the end.
